Women’s Top 3 Worries for Retirement
A recent survey by Lake Research Partners show the top 3 worries women have for their future are:
- The ability to pay for gas (87%)
- The ability to afford good health care (73%)
- Concern Social Security won’t be available for them (68%)
As we all know "worrying" doesn’t solve anything, but taking action certainly can. What might some alternatives be for the issues raised above?
To combat gas prices -
- Carpool or take public transportation
- Consolidate errands
- Walk or bicycle when possible ( may see health improvements too)
- Start a business from home and eliminate the cost of commuting
To afford good health care -
- First and foremost is to stay as healthy as possible (for a number of reasons of course) but it does help when applying for health insurance to NOT NEED it at that point in time
- Shop around, look at different deductibles within company plans
- Get insurance based on your needs. Example - You may not need a policy that includes maternity, but may be interested in one that covers some long term care
- If you’re with a company, group plans are usually less expensive - although premiums continue to rise. Ask if there is a stepped plan you can participate in
- During your retirement planning be sure to allocate funds for insurance costs
Concerns about Social Security -
- It’s never to late to start planning as though it won’t be there
- Take advantage of 401k plans, IRA’s, ROTH IRA’s, etc. and deposit as much as possible each year. (Do not invest 100% of your account into your company stock- diversify)
- Educate yourself about alternative asset portfolios and how you can use self directed IRA’s to invest in things such as real estate (although down now - potentially a great time to invest - diversify)
- Start a business from home and take advantage of the MANY tax savings you could qualify for - this alone could begin funding your IRA
- Whatever you do - TAKE ACTION. Compound interest in King!
Please comment about what your concerns are for the future, and what steps are you taking to minimize the stress?
Until next time, J.
