How Can I Be Sure It's Not a Scam?

There are some home business companies that claim you can achieve "instant success". While some people may experience "success" pretty quickly, the majority does not and the ads are full of hype. (This does not mean it’s a scam though – just full of hype!)

The challenge comes in looking beyond that and truly performing your due diligence. One secret is to start with finding a business that fits your personality. Then you will have more intuitive type questions to ask. Be sure to check out the primary business, how long it’s been around, the marketing plan, the comp plan, the integrity of its owners, management and top performers. It’s likely (as with any business) you might find someone was disgruntled and has left a negative post of some sort online, but look at the big picture and whether it’s a relevant complaint.

Also, be aware that 97% of network marketers Do Not make much money for the first couple of years. If you fall into this category it’s probably not because the company was a "scam", but because your efforts didn’t match your expectations and/or the training you received (or didn’t) couldn’t assist you with getting to the next level.

Hint: Training is a key element to research when performing your due diligence….

What do you look for in a company? :-)

Until next time, J.

Hi J, Just came across your blog here, and I enjoyed your post. It is hard to weed out the work at home business opportunities that you see everywhere when looking to make money at home. People have to also beware of paying for any services in order to get a job… if you have to pay it is not legit. You should never have to pay someone any amount of money to get a job to work online, that is probably the number one mistake that most newbies will be more apt to make. Buyer beware?

Thanks for stopping by! While I do agree with you that you don’t want to pay money for a “job”, there are many legitimate opportunities online that do require start up capital. The difference is owning your own business vs. getting a “job”. Rather than spending tens of thousands ( or even hundreds of thousands) of dollars for a brick and mortar franchise, many are opting to work from home in a lucrative business venture. Yes, still buyer beware – do your homework – but you don’t always need to run the other way!
