Workaholics Anonymous
January seems to always be the month we tend to take a good look at our business and ourselves to set goals for the upcoming year. As with most of you, I too have been undertaking that endeavor. I also enjoy reading others tips and what types of actions they are finding to be helpful in being more productive.
Darren Hardy of Success is one individual I enjoy following. He has recently started what he calls a 12-step program for those of us who are qualified "workaholics". I’m making a big assumption here, but I bet there are some of you who could benefit from the article as well. I especially like the part about making a "Stop Doing List". You’re familiar with the 80/20 rule? This focuses on your eliminating those unproductive tasks that take up most of your time, so you can spend time on revenue generating action items. He has some great insight – take a look .
What types of activities belong on your Stop Doing List?
Until next time, J.

On my Stop Doing list (late into last year) I really tried hard to NOT answer my phone outside my business hours. It’s tough to do, but when you spend as much time on the phone as I do, fielding questions that are often answered in the material at a given website (but for reading), you’ve got to start drawing the line somewhere! Again, it’s tough since I know how many people are truly lost online and need help.
Great post!

Touche’…. I”m glad you are setting some boundaries for yourself! I think sometimes people get on overload with things to read though, so “talking” is a break for them! Plus by not always answering your calls, you are allowing some family and regenerating time into your life.
You deserve it! (From one workaholic to another….)

Last year I had to set a boundary and reduce my work week from 7 days to 5. (Hi! I’m Kathy. I too am a workaholic!) It was a great decision. Being a workaholic, I had to adopt the mindset of the whole “if you have 7 hours to cut down a tree, spend 2 sharpening your saw” kind of thinking. In other words, I had to view taking time off AS a form of working!
How’s that for pathetic?

Congratulations Kathy! I used to feel guilty when I took time off- but then found that allowing myself time to achieve some “balance”, I was actually more productive when back at work.

My stop doing list for this year includes stop reading and learning about blogging and start doing what I have learned so far! This is one of the most important “have to do” tasks for me.

Yes, there is a point when you need to stop “getting ready to get ready”. You need to take a leap of faith and as the old Nike saying goes “Just Do It”. I’m glad you are going to take action, you can always improve as you go.
To your success!
