Does a College Degree Ensure Employment These Days?
Yesterday there were many proud parents watching as their kids names were called to receive their college degrees. We were one of them – wow – where did the last four years go? Our youngest son, Jeremy (22) was amongst the ranks to graduate, actually making it on the “4 year plan” even. There was a time we weren’t so sure though! Now, many are wondering too, does a college degree ensure employment these days? It used to, but these are different times….
As with many kids their 1st year away from home is a “testing the waters” time frame so to speak. It’s not that he did poorly in school, but he certainly had the candle burning on both ends….(oh to be young again!). We knew though that he wasn’t performing his best, (because this kid is smart) and as important as “social” is to round a person out – he needed to get with the program a bit more in his next year or “Club Chico ” would be on his dime and not on ours. So he did focus more, but really started to kick it up when he went away to Spain in his Junior year and studied abroad. (Another experience he is so blessed to have had and will always remember.) Here’s a photo of him in Barcelona and loving life!

Forward to now….. he graduated with a double major ~ Organizational Business Management and Project Management . So will it be enough to land a job in today’s economy? He has one for the summer, which is more than some can say. We’ll see where it goes from there. Now he’s even hoping to pursue his Masters degree and would like to focus on International Business .
Jeremy is our entrepreneur at heart though, having tried a few times already at starting his own business. I know that he will be coming up with another idea and ultimately will be running his own show some day. Experience working for someone else first though will be good to springboard from, not to mention a way he can start saving to put into a business.
If you have any suggestions for Jeremy, (or would even like to see his resume) I’d love to hear from you…
Until next time, J.

Well, I’d like to frame the question another way: Does not having a college degree assure you of employment? You’re better off getting a degree as the scope of getting a job and the scope of getting a higher salary are much better with a college degree.
I agree that the economy is shaky and jobs are not as plentiful as they used to be, but that should not stop anyone from pursuing a degree. In fact, this is a good opportunity to advance your credentials in the job market by enrolling for a higher degree. A higher level college degree program would work as a long term investment which will increase your earning potential. I believe Jeremy is right on and the education that he is acquiring will definitely pay off.
