"So thoroughly is the economy decoupled from ordinary experience that according to a CNN poll, 57 percent of Americans thought we were already in a recession a month ago."

Even during times of economic upswings, the trouble lies in the fact that these upswings never make a difference to the vast majority of working-class individuals . There have been reported periods where, according to the powers that be, we should all be enjoying prosperity. Tell that to those suffering under the crippling power of mounting bills, imminent foreclosure, and job loss.
