IRS says you can deduct the use of a home office as long as it is used exclusively and regular basis. As long as we do our logs,we should have a good relationship to our customers, clients, or patients, and communicate them & listen to educational tapes, read business related materials, and prepare customer billings from your home office you are performing administrative activities. Thanks for your informative article more power to your site! G_d bless ;-)

That was a really useful post, thank you. I'm always worried about tax when I go on business, and yet it's the last thing I think about when packing. I found this on a related hotel search but will bear it in mind for future. Mary.

You have hit on exactly the rub I've been complaining about for awhile.

About 70% of American kids now go on to a traditional college of one sort or another.

They graduate four years later with no discernible skills or subject that they LOVE, and an average debt of $17,000.

Then they are faced with making a living, and have to start from scratch to develop whatever it is that they can become passionate about.

Those who, instead of going on to a traditional college, invest that same four years in developing deep knowledge or skill in one area, they have a product or service that they can offer the public.

I have two brothers. One went to a traditional college and learned how to party and put on great tailgate football drinking parties. Now he is living with my folks. This brother knows

1) How to party
2) That he has rights
3) That questioning if there is a God is a great idea.
4) That he has no job, skill or knowledge to address his college loans.

In other words, his traditional college experience ruined him in my opinion.

On the other hand, my other brother attended Linda Christas College, and at the same time, since it is online at your pace school, was able to learn about the landscape architecture business while making money.
Since then he has added a landscape equipment business on top of that.

He is still attending Linda Christas (he is a business/environmental sustainability major), already makes a nice living with his business, and has zero debt.

What I am saying here is that a traditional college didn't prepare my first brother to love anything in particular, except foreign beer. While not subjecting himself to the corrupting influence of a face to face college, my second brother did and is doing very well.

Now the US Department of Education came out in 2009 and said that online students learn a lot more than face to face students. Well, where were they when they were panning online education several years ago.

My point in all of this is I agree with your point that you must do something you love. But, you shouldn't wait until you are 22 or 23 years old, and deeply in debt to decide what that is and start working on it.

Excellent article. To me, the State of the Union address was very bland and had nothing new to offer. So, Janet, I agree with you. I don’t feel that there can be a true, long-term recovery in the U.S. economy as a result of massive government spending.

Sure there has been some short-term improvement in the economic numbers. Some preferred groups have been helped such as car buyers, home buyers, bankers, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG, General Motors, etc. But I don’t feel that this is helping the average American or small business.

Unfortunately, there must be major structural changes for there to be long lasting improvement in the economy. This will be painful for many, but I don’t see how it can be avoided.

Janet
Yes this is I am sure very tough times to raise any kids, single parent or not. My wife raised 3 boys herself before me and I can't believe some of the stories she has told me about the court system that would rule Dad needs to pay xxx amount per month and then after 3 months no money showed up so she was back in court. The same old thing maybe, they would scare him for a month or 2 and then nothing. What a joke. The system.
Way to many lawyers in Washington, they just feed thier own mouths. I don't believe the government should or can give us much security, but just wish they would get out of the way and let the system take over. It would fix itself. Dave Ramsey's advise and many others.

Back to the Union, I can't believe how stupid they, not only WH, but all of Washington, must think we are.
We (the public) has never been stupid, but rather to busy to think we could make any difference by disagreeing with them. We are much more informed now due to all of the communication we have axcess to now, ie internet , blogs etc. We must stick together and some of the ones being elected will and are starting to think about their career in Washington.
I believe we are making a difference.

I agree with the author that getting yourself familiarized with how to manage your finances is extremely important for sound financial health and independence. Another thing that is essential for financial well being is a solid education. College education will help you get better and well-paying jobs. The more you earn, the more finically stable you are and the more you can save for the future. Many of my women friends have enrolled into degree programs from some or the other colleges after getting married and having kids because they realize the importance of being financially independent.

I couldn't agree with you more.. I am a single mother myself so i can really relate on "hold down 2 jobs to make ends meet – but can’t even find one". It is so frustrating to find two jobs just to have food to put in our children's mouth. I hope the government would do something more to solve some of the problems we are facing. More power to this site! :)
